Casa na Rua Montebelo 59

The intervention includes a doorway dating back to the 14th century. The layered ruins, with their medieval fragments, reinforce the building’s historical value and sense of antiquity.

Medieval European constructions that survived to our time were generally defined by their enclosed relationship with the public space. Interestingly, contemporary architectural tendencies in the area also favor enclosure. The project therefore sought to preserve this character: a solid, introverted exterior that provides privacy and tranquility in contrast to the increasingly overburdened world outside. The design for this two-bedroom, single-family house introduced a new upper floor and a generous terrace, reusing much of the original granite and complementing it with travertine, wood, and exposed clay brick elements. The interplay of natural materials, light, and shadow has produced a contemporary 21st-century home that honors the past while looking to the future.
